Science in Society’s Director (Mike Kennedy) and the VP for Youth Development at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago (Milo Hinojosa) will give a joint talk at TEDxNorthwestern on Saturday, April 28, 0218.
This presentation, titled Relationships and Belonging in Science (Education), shares the development and design of the award-winning Science Club program model.
Science Club is a multi-partner, interdisciplinary collaboration focused on long-term skills gains and relationship-building for middle school youth. Now in its tenth year, Science Club’s collective impact model and ecosystem approach emphasizes STEM identity and mentorship via collaborative, hands-on experimental projects. And the program’s multi-modal metrics–gathered and analyzed by expert external evaluators in informal science learning–show unprecedented gains for both participating students and scientist-mentors.
In the talk, Hinojosa and Kennedy will share the program’s design and some impact data alongside case studies of program alumni, now in high school and college.
Their joint Science Club presentation is one of eight at TEDxNorthwestern 2018. Other presenters include Northwestern’s new Provost, Jonathan Holloway. The conference theme is Against the Grain: “about individuals who have defied expectations and contradicted the standard narrative. How people have charted their own path and innovated in unprecedented ways”.
